Christian Schwägerl

Anthropocene - biosphere - climate - energy - mobility - science - technology

As a freelance journalist, book author, and founder, my mission is to empower the public to form a well-rounded understanding of the world. I am committed to delivering high-quality journalism, characterized by reliable information, vivid descriptions, and essential context, all grounded in thorough research and insightful interviews.

Journalistic independence is at the core of my work. My journalistic training at the esteemed German School of Journalism in Munich, complemented by academic studies in biology and a Master’s in Science from the University of Reading, has equipped me with a unique perspective. Between 1997 and 2012, I honed my craft as a staff correspondent for prestigious publications, including Berliner Zeitung, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), and Der Spiegel.

Since 2012, I have embraced the dynamic world of freelance journalism, contributing to leading outlets such as Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Spektrum der Wissenschaft, GEO, PM, RiffReporter, IP – Zeitschrift für Internationale Politik, and Yale E360. I am always enthusiastic about collaborating on new projects with respected media organizations.

Throughout my career, I have been honored with several awards, including the prestigious Hofschneider Award for Science and Medical Journalism in 2024 and the Neumarkt Sustainability Award in 2025. My work adheres to the rigorous code of conduct I helped establish at RiffReporter, underscoring the principles of independence, objectivity, and impartiality. I do not engage in PR for companies, nor do I endorse or favor any political parties or NGOs.

Global Perspectives

I am the author of three books: "Anthropocene," "11 Looming Wars" (co-authored with Andreas Rinke), which delves into the risks of global conflicts, and "Die Analoge Revolution," which explores the future trajectory of digital technologies. My book on the Anthropocene served as the inspiration for two significant cultural projects, in which I played a key role on the managing teams: the "Anthropocene Project" at the House of World Cultures in Berlin 2012-2014 and the special exhibition "Welcome to the Anthropocene" at the Deutsches Museum.

Masterclass Science Journalism and Riff Initiative

From 2014 to 2022, I led the Masterclass Science Journalism, a program generously funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung. This initiative offered over 50 mid-career science journalists the opportunity to develop groundbreaking projects and collaborate with esteemed colleagues and industry innovators.

In 2013, I established the Riff Initiative to enhance the landscape of quality journalism. This effort resulted in the creation of two distinct organizations by our team of co-founders:

Both organizations operate independently, each supporting quality journalism through diverse strategies and approaches. The term "Riff" embodies the diversity, cooperation, and depth reminiscent of coral reefs. At the cooperative, I served as Co-CEO from 2017 to 2022, and I have been the managing partner of the non-profit since 2015.
